Slate Cummings parked his teams Moser Engineering backed late
model Camaro in the San Antonio Raceway winners circle Sunday
evening after defeating Terry Emmons in the Stock Eliminator final
at the opening IHRA Division 4 Summit Pro-Am Series event. The
Hammond, LA resident nearly duplicated that feat in his Super
Stock Grand Am after mowing through the field in that class as
well, only to have a mechanical failure end his quest for the
double victory in the final round.
Cummings, a former IHRA World Champion in both Top Dragster and
Super Stock, made a rare appearance in Stock Eliminator at the
event, as the Moser Camaro is normally driven by Slate’s brother,
and former IHRA Quick Rod World Champion, Britt Cummings. Before
knocking off the always tough Terry Emmons in the final round,
Slate Cummings had the unenviable task of defeating Terry’s
brother Jerry in round two. He then defeated Fred Henson in the
third round to earn the semi-final bye run, setting up the final
clash with Emmons. There, Cummings left with an uncharacteristic
.046 reaction, but still had the starting line advantage over
Emmons’ .067. That margin was more than enough as Cummings used
his finish line skills to take the stripe by a scant .000 margin
and win a double-breakout affair with a -.014 10.856.
While Cummings was rolling thru the Stock Eliminator field, he was
also making a mockery of the Super Stock class on Sunday. In the
opening four rounds, his worst reaction time was a great .014, as
he advanced past notable Super Stock combatants Cody Blackmon and
Terry Emmons. That set up a final round match-up with chassis
builder DeWayne Custer. Having just defeated Emmons for the Stock
title minutes before, Cummings looked primed and ready for an
elusive “Double” victory, but his equipment did not cooperate.
When Cummings staged for the final and set the transbrake, his
Moser Engineering Grand Am rocked back out of the stage beams,
ending his bid for the double win with an automatic red light.
“Two final rounds is a great way to start the season,” said
Cummings. “I just want to thank my father Larry, my brother Britt,
our entire family, Moser Engineering for all they do for our team
and sportsman racing in general, Wegner Enterprises for building
the motor in the Camaro, and each of our marketing partners for
making our success possible.” Those partners include Reher &
